Rep. Lewis has filed the following bill to address tax fairness issues:
An Act to Improve Fairness for Residents in Appealing Property Tax Assessments: Current law presents a significant impediment to a taxpayer’s ability to seek judicial review of property tax assessments. This bill amends the statute to allow taxpayers to incur interest on their real estate tax payments and still have a right of appeal to the Appellate Tax Board. Taxpayers would have to pay all real estate taxes and interest due before the end of the fiscal year or the filing of the complaint at the Appellate Tax Board, whichever is later. As a result, taxes collected by municipalities should be no different than required under current law.
